Types of business lenders in the Philippines

Most Philippine companies fund working capital and growth through five kinds of lenders. Which one fits depends on how fast you need the money, what security you can offer, and what the facility may cost.

01

Banks

Universal and commercial banks, along with smaller savings banks (thrift banks), supervised by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. They offer the lowest rates and the widest product range, but expect conservative underwriting: audited financials, collateral for most facilities, and the slowest approvals.

02

Financing companies

Registered with the SEC under the Financing Company Act (RA 8556), these lenders fund equipment, receivables and working capital for companies that banks turn away or serve too slowly, usually at mid-market loan sizes and higher rates than banks.

03

Lending companies

Also SEC-registered, under the Lending Company Regulation Act (RA 9474). They serve smaller, shorter-term loans and generally decide faster than banks or financing companies.

04

Alternative and fintech lenders

These lenders decide based on cash flows, bank statements and receivables rather than hard collateral. Rates are higher than banks charge, but decisions arrive in days rather than months.

05

Development institutions

Government-linked and development banks run dedicated programs for MSMEs, agriculture and exporters, often at below-market rates for qualifying borrowers.

Alternative lenders for small and mid-sized businesses

When a bank caps or declines a credit line, Philippine companies typically turn to cash-flow lenders, receivables and invoice financiers or, for larger amounts, mezzanine and private credit providers. Cash-flow lending sizes a facility on demonstrated collections rather than collateral, which suits services companies and distributors with few fixed assets.

The trade-off is price: non-bank loans usually cost several percentage points more than bank loans, in exchange for speed and a higher chance of approval. Filter the directory above by non-bank lenders to compare their loan sizes and financing types side by side.

How to approach business lenders in the Philippines

01

Shortlist three to five lenders

Mix at least one bank with one or two non-bank lenders, so you can weigh pricing against speed and collateral demands. Export the PDF shortlist to align your team before reaching out.

02

Prepare one information pack

Lenders move faster when audited financials, interim numbers, bank statements and an aging of receivables are ready before you approach them. One consistent pack also keeps the offers comparable.

03

Compare offers on more than the rate

Weigh security and personal guarantees, covenants, fees and prepayment terms alongside the headline rate. The cheapest quote is not always the cheapest loan.

If you want an experienced team to prepare the pack and run the process with lenders, that is what our debt advisory work covers. Learn more about our Raising Equity or Debt service.
