Luxembourg's hardware and manufacturing base is small relative to its neighbours, and most producers sell into the wider European market rather than domestically. Activity concentrates in precision manufacturing, industrial suppliers feeding German, French and Belgian value chains, and equipment linked to the country's logistics and satellite communications sectors. Steel remains part of the industrial picture, with ArcelorMittal headquartered in Luxembourg City.
Because the domestic customer base is limited, hardware companies here are export-oriented early, and revenue is usually spread across several European countries. Buyers treat proven international revenue as an advantage, but they test it closely: where contracts sit, under which governing law, in what currency, and how much of the order book depends on a small number of customers.
Valuation frameworks separate distribution and assembly operations from businesses that add engineering, integration or customisation. Distribution-led companies are assessed on logistics efficiency and working capital discipline; those with technical content, aftermarket service or recurring revenue support higher multiples. Pricing is in euros, so eurozone buyers compare earnings without a currency translation step.
The buyer pool is largely foreign. Strategic acquirers from Germany, France and Belgium are the nearest, and private equity interest typically arrives through an existing European platform. Buyers from outside the EU and EEA should account for the screening regime introduced by the law of 14 July 2023, which applies to investments giving control of a Luxembourg entity active in critical sectors, including dual-use goods and aerospace. Manufacturing employers frequently draw on a workforce commuting from France, Germany and Belgium, which brings cross-border payroll and social security into diligence.
