Types of business lenders in India

Most Indian companies fund working capital and growth through five kinds of lenders. The right one depends on how fast you need the money, what security you can offer, and what the facility may cost.

01

Scheduled commercial banks

Public and private sector banks supervised by the Reserve Bank of India offer the lowest rates and the full product range, from cash credit and overdraft limits to term loans. Expect thorough documentation, security for most facilities and the slowest approvals.

02

NBFCs

RBI-registered non-banking financial companies are the workhorse of mid-market lending in India. They decide faster than banks and take security more flexibly, at rates a few percentage points higher.

03

Small finance banks

Licensed banks focused on smaller businesses and underserved segments. Rates and requirements usually sit between the large banks and NBFCs.

04

Venture debt and growth lenders

Funds and NBFCs that lend to venture-backed and high-growth companies, sized against recent funding and recurring revenue rather than collateral. Facilities often carry warrants alongside interest.

05

Development institutions

Government-linked development finance institutions run dedicated programs for MSMEs, manufacturing and exporters, often at below-market rates for qualifying borrowers.

NBFC and alternative lenders for mid-sized businesses

When bank limits are capped or an enhancement stalls at annual review, Indian companies typically turn to NBFCs, private credit funds and, for larger needs, mezzanine providers. Cash-flow and receivables-based lending suits services companies and distributors with few fixed assets, while mezzanine sits between senior debt and equity for growth or acquisition funding.

The trade-off is price: non-bank facilities usually cost several percentage points more than bank loans, in exchange for speed and a higher chance of approval. Filter the directory above by non-bank lenders to compare their loan sizes and financing types side by side.

How to approach business lenders in India

01

Shortlist three to five lenders

Mix at least one bank with one or two NBFCs, so you can weigh pricing against speed and security demands. Export the PDF shortlist to align your team before reaching out.

02

Prepare one information pack

Lenders move faster when audited financials, GST returns, bank statements and an aging of receivables are ready before you approach them. One consistent pack also keeps the offers comparable.

03

Compare offers on more than the rate

Weigh security and promoter guarantees, covenants, processing fees and prepayment terms alongside the headline rate. The cheapest quote is not always the cheapest loan.

If you want an experienced team to prepare the pack and run the process with lenders, that is what our debt advisory work covers. Learn more about our Raising Equity or Debt service.
